When contemporary ideas are fragmented and dispersed upon concepts of the past the result is a meeting place for tomorrow's inspiration.

My final submission, consisting of an Alvar Aalto monument, Kengo Kuma monument and a meeting place for studying students of architecture explores and delivers the inspiring result when modern day architecture including that of Kengo Kuma is applied to reknowned architectural concepts of the past and past architects including Alvar Aalto. It symbolises that the architecture of tomorrow, reflected through the meeting place, must be composed of both past and present architectural thinking to ensure its success and inspirational place in history.

As shown within the image above my combined piece of architecure protrudes out of the cliff face; supported out of the water below by monumental solid columns which are ground into the landscape and the base of the lake. Throughout the day light is fragmented and dispersed by the transparent thin planes of the Kuma monument onto the inspiring hovering meeting place of semi-transparency and the solid climatic step-like structure of the Aalto monument below.

The elevated meeting place of my design consists of an inspiring combination of Aalto and Kuma archtecture. The meeting place is wrapped around a vertical Aalto solid brick supporting column which places it within the climatic climb and approach of the architecture. Thin, semi-transparent Kengo boundaries further encourage the dispersion and fragmentation of filtered light from the thin Kengo planes above onto the dense Aalto model below.

Entry points for the various students to this piece of inspirational architecture consist of a sandy path of vegetation connected to the step-like solid Aalto column at the base of the cliff, a rocky dirt path through a small gorge joint to the Kengo monument and a small climatic drop down from the grassy plateau located directly above the top of the architecture. Through these three different entry points one experiences a climatic ascent through the monumental architecture as well as a scenic descent through which one experiences the fragmenting and dispersion of light in its many forms.

The voids through the vertical solid column of Aalto provide a calming illumnation of the architecture throughout the night. The open ends of the Aalto columns allow light to illuminate the water below and escape from the top of the architecture therefore giving it a glowing effect from the night sky. The reflected light off the shining water surface further reinforces the monumentality of the structure from its base and the transparent planes of the meeting place and Kengu monument absorb the flowing light from voids in the Aalto column therefore giving them the light appearance of floating and being disconnected from the rest of the architecture.

The positioning of the architecture enables one to experience the breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape and open sea. The addition of selected light, medium and dark custom textures on various surfaces reinforces the monumentality and solidness of the Aalto monument, the lightweight freedom feel of the Kengo monument and the coming together of two distinctly different pieces of architecture to create a new piece of architecture which flows as one. A piece of architecture in which two extreme concepts from different time periods are still readily evident but compromised in such a way that enables the successful creation of new inspiring architecture; the architecture of tomorrow.
