Experiment 3: The Bridge- Final Submission

In a highly competitive future where one is killed unless it gets bigger only a thin bridge of moral judgement separates well known recognizable forces which remain as a leading overlooking presence in society from dominant influential icons who in an attempt to gain leverage and continue to grow at whatever the cost lose everything as the price for pushing beyond unsupported limits of self control in search of undisputed power.

The final submission consisting of a bridge of moral judgement, headquarters for the powerful coorporations Cocacola and Facebook as well as a meeting place in which their respective directors are transported to by elevators replicates the need for moral judgment and supported self control when attempting to acquiring power. My bridge spanning the treacherous yet breathtaking Twin Falls of Kakadu symbolises the safe path of moral judgement and the self control required to cross everyday power related decisions therefore ensuring one does not fall off the edge of morality to their depths as a result of pushing boundaries of power beyond unsupported limits of control.

The headquarters of Cocacola represents an overseeing dominant force in the world which handles their power with the morality and self control required to be truly successful. Its securely supported position on the cliff ledge above the bridge reinforces the strength and solidness of its influential power over the rest of society. The design of the roof replicating the Cocacola logo symbolises the flow of effortless power which is extended over the rest of humanity and the clean solid stairway leading up to the enclosed transparent office above demonstrates the solid power resulting from moral self control which enables one to oversee and influence the rest of the world.

The sprawled weakly supported headquarters of facebook which hangs off the elevated cliff face of Twin Falls symbolises the fear and dangers of chasing power without any moral self control. The dangerous decent from the bridge of moral judgement above involves stairs and narrow plane surfaces only just wide enough for one to walk on; therefore expressing a fearful experience associated with making power hungry decisions as one is forced to look down upon the tracherous cliff drop below which awaits them if they continue to make the wrong judgements.

The open atmosphere of the facebook headquarters demonstrates the inability for one to push extremes of power and gain leaverage over others while hiding from the rest of the world avoiding the consequences of their lacking self control and morality.

The meeting place situated on the edge of the waterfall cliff face reinforces the imortance of morality and the dangers of pushing boundaries of power beyond capable limits to gain undisputed dominance over others. The open atmosphere in which directors meet for lunch further evokes exposure to the consequences which await them if they take advantage of their influence over society and use their power to munipulate others and gain leaverage.

The dining table in which the directors meet symbolises the difference between the well supported judgment of Cocacola and the weak morality of the Facebook corporation. It is seen however through the dining table that both corporations require each other to remain standing with Cocacola pressuring facebook to remain moral and facebook ensuring Cocacola remains honest and grounded with the rest of the society.

The gradual decent of the Twin Falls Kakadu from the stable elevated lake above to the tracherous waterfall drop below reinforces the gradual decent of morality which awaits those who are driven not by moral judgment but by the hunger for unequivalent power and dominance over the rest of the world. The overlooking position of the bridge and headquarters justifies the benefits of staying moral and not pushing limits of power beyond control as the one who remains moral will always be able to see the rest of the world clearly while the one who loses themself in a quest for power will be lost forever.

Completed Sketchup Model with Custom Textures Applied

My completed sketchup model consists of the bridge, Cocacola and Facebook headquarters, two elevators and a meeting place. Textures used within the model was a combination of sketchup textures available, custom textures and image logos of the Cocacola and Facebook.

The selected periodic texture was applied to the external sides of the bridge amongst surrounding stone textures to symbolise the periodic cyclic notion of power; that those in dominating positions who do not use morality or self control with their judgment will eventually fall to a position in which they have no power at all.

The headquarters of cocacola was textured with transparent glass facades and the fluid custom texture around the railings to symbolise the overseeing power of those in control and fluid notion in which their powerful influence flows.

The stairs of the Cocacola headquarters were marble textured with a wooden finish on the sides to further reinforce wealth, class and power as these textures are more exclusive than the stone on the bridge representing the rest of society below.

The sprawled transverse texture applied to the middle surface of the expansive Facebook headquarters symbolises the chaos of power when it is not contained and controlled; further represented through the unpredictable placement of planes and spaces created.

The metal textures applied to the stairs of the Facebook headquarters expresses the harsh decent from controlled power with morality to unstable dominance and chaos.

The custom scalar texture applied to the dining table and supports of the meeting place demonstrate the scalar effect of power's influence therefore reinforcing the need for one to be morally content with the power they have to ensure they do not lose everything attempting to procure power in which they can not control.

Peer Review On Design So Far

Peer Rewiew 1: Richard Garland

Peer Review 2: Tao Song

As a result of these peer reviews of my progress design i came to the decision to add increased detail into my environment to ensure it reflects my chosen valley, add levels of depth including shading into my custom textures to depict characteristics of movement more successfully and work on expressing my idea of power more thouroughly through my structure and its surrounding environment.

36 Custom Textures: Experimenting with Movement

Transverse Movement

Rotational Movement

Scalar Movement

Periodic Movement

Fluid Movement

Attraction Movement

Chosen Custom Textures

This periodic texture symbolises the cyclic nature of power in society.

This fluid texture represents the flow of influence one possesses with power.

This transverse texture demonstrates the chaotic nature of power when it is not handled with moral judgment and self control.

This scalar texture reinforces the expanding effect of power's reach on society.

Draft Design Models

Draft Design Model 1

My first draft model of my bridge and two headquarters tried to encapsulate the idea of dominant power and decaying power. The dominant power being the headquarters of cocacola would be large, dominating and overseeing all; therefore placed above the bridge on a ledge symbolising increased power. The bridge would extend over the valley above a waterfall and lake below replicating that of The Twin Falls Kakadu. The bridge would gradually decay in form until one reached the facebook headquarters which appears to be falling apart and ready to collapse, therefore symbolising decayed order and a loss of power. I did not put the water beds or waterfall into the environement yet as i was more concerned with the placement of the overall model in the environment as opposed to environment details.

The whole structure would hang off the edge of the cliff as would the meeting place to reinterate the fear of power and the need for control to prevent one falling off the cliff edge and therefer losing all power. The left perspective above was my inspiration for my cocacola headquarters as it gave the concept of seclusion and confined safety. The right perspective encouraged the design of my facebook headquarters as it apeared to be a sprawling structure of chaos representing the chaos of facebook's decayed power.

 Draft Design Model 2

Moving on from my first draft i tried to make the headquarters look more abstract and interesting while still converying the notion of structured and decayed power i am trying to get across. For both headquarters i tried to create a series of spaces which reflect their power instead of just geometrical shapes. For the cocacola headquarters i created a gradual climatic progression to the empowering headquarters above and for the facebook headquarters i attempted to creat a set of spaces through use of interlocking planes to give the impression of an unsafe, exposed decaying structure. I will next try and incorporate shapes and structures which reflect the two chosen companies of cocacola and facebook for a more abstract effect and greater understanding.

Getting An Elevator Working

I followed the video tute by Russell on Sunday morning but wasnt able to get a working elevator. I was sure i had all the coding correct because i just followed Russell's directions.

I thought i may have done something wrong so i tried again earlier today, the same result occured. I'm not sure if its a problem with where i've saved my model and if that would impact it working or not.  Here's an image of my coding; i had to assign the imput keys to the selected entity manually, im not sure if this would impact my result.

On attempting my third go of the elevator i found that by using different keys (l and n) and reloading the script the elevator would work.

The premise of my design is based around the concerns of controlling power and the ability one has to contain it.
As for my crysis environment i've decided to place the two headquarters on the sides of the valley and the meeting place on the cliff face- perhaps hanging over the top of it to remind of the thin line between having controll of immense power and going off the edge with no return; as experienced if you fall off a waterfall which is immensly high. The process from the unique individual headquarters to the meeting place will be a gradual process of increased fear and loss of stable control, leading to unpredictability and large impulses of personal gain.

I am still in the process of deciding how i want to portray my environment but am planning to recreate it with further detail and capturing the experience of getting closer to the edge of a waterfall (getting more extreme and rapid as you get closer).

Week 2 Tasks

Mashup Draft 2

Communication is one of the world's most well known transcended sources of power recognizable throughout the world. This omnipresent image of socialising and staying in touch with the world through social media has continued to penetrate its influence around the world; expanding its world dominance over time with over a century of history behind it. Although social technology has aided the progress of our current world we must be aware that  with technological creation comes a controlling and influential power that should concern all of us; a source of power as undisputed as it is frightening should one push its limits of control. These corporate sources of power are accountable to no one operating with apparent immunity from the law and with their power continually growing the only real alternative left is to either beat a retreat into a self-imposed disconnected world or total surrender to the power of its influence. The hyperbolic pace at which technology moves is no match for reason and therefore as the price we pay the rest of the moral world has limited powers and resources to pursue force to fight for the rest of us that have surrendered. In the future socialising must be a powerful leader in its field of communication. Its global reach which has established a presence inthe world we know promises to be a future in the highly competitive world which believes “'We're going to get killed here unless we get bigger”. Through the power of communication businesses have continued to growwithin this world of hit or miss existence therefore extending their reach. By utilising the power of communication as a way to gain more leverage socialising businesses have appeared destined to remain a major force in an area that holds great promise for the future.

This mashup is an improvement on my first draft as it is more condensed and appears as one piece of literature. I still need to cut down my mashup and need to work on more what im now trying to get across as a whole about how pushing boundaries of power too far results in a loss of control and moral judgement. The direction of my mashup has evolved as my design idea has progressed.
